I guess the answer depends on the needs and interests of the buyer. One problem for me is that, once I buy a DVD player, I'm going to want to buy an AV receiver, surround speakers, woofer, and -- of course -- a better TV! That's gonna run into serious money!
I figure when my current computer is ready to be replaced, I will make sure the new one has a DVD drive and the means to play DVD video. That may be a few years down the road, though, but eventually I will probably have both kinds of player.
Today I tracked down a DVD FAQ site, which of course will appear on our "links" page. In the meantime, here is the URL for the specific section about "which player should I buy."
