Computer DvD vs DvD Player Question, Again!!!

There are two common kinds of DvD players:
Computer DvD players look like a CD rom drive in your computer and come with software that let you play the DvDs
Table top (or TV top) players replace your VCR players

My question:
Is one noticeably better than the other? And Why?

My view is that they are roughly comparable and in fact, you may get a better picture on a computer monitor, at least until Digital TVs become more common and affordable. But please feel free to disagree! I seriously want to know.

I have a home computer network and installing DvD players in individual PCs seems to be the way to go for my situation. My local video rental store has a special, allowing us to rent a table top player and some DvDs for fifteen bucks, for a long weekend. I have done this twice, but the last was more than a year ago. Perhaps I missed something? Or perhaps newer players are substantially improved. Any thoughts?

There are also quite a few DvDs that have additional software for the computer. One group of these DVDs can be found on the PC Friendly Web Site [http://www.pcfriendly.com/en/default.htm]. I assume a table top DvD player would ignore these extras?
