My Dog Skip and Magnolia

well the only connection is that I watched them on consecutive days and am still under Magnolia's spell.

I hated the first hour or so of it. Not even the strangely fetching Jeremy Blackman as the boy genius moved me much until the film suddenly caught me by the balls and I was lost. I think Aimee's haunting music helped the spell along.

No obviously BL themes although the sad fate of the child-star-as-adult is well portrayed and with a homosexual twist. Robards' deathbed monologue is brilliant if a little long-winded.

So to My Dog Skip which I think *did* have a BL theme in the strong friendship between the 19 yr old sports-hero Dink and Willie the lonely geeky boy played by Frankie Muniz. Frankie was good if a little too good in parts - I suppose it was a strain for a 14 yr old to play an 9 yr old and he camped it up a bit but did so fetchingly.

Dink falls into the depths of ignominy but somehow is rescued by the love that Willie has for him, this emphasised by Willie's father played rather well by Kevin Bacon in a non sexy role.

I suppose you could transmogrify Skip into an adult friend - (I mean he is 7 times older in doggie years) and his role as a mentor and besotted lover to Willie makes a nice parable but I am probably way off line here. Or am I?
