DVD transfer problems?

I noticed a customer review which describes the DVD transfer as "horrible."
Last night on The Late Show David Letterman showed considerable hostility (yes, I know, how can you tell? :) as he ranted about how the DVD of Lawrence of Arabia he had looked forward to watching turned out to display the characters' faces as shades of blue.
Now, the next day, I hear about other problems with DVD transfer. Is this the start of a new trend? Has anyone here noticed transfer problems with any DVD he's bought or rented? (I have not.)
