As I was reading your message (with which I agree completely), I remembered something else. When Boorman made "The Emerald Forest," whom did he cast in the main juvenile role? Charlie Boorman, his son.
In "Tailor of Panama," whom did he cast as the young daughter (the sister of the character played by Dan Radcliffe)? Lola Boorman, his young daughter!
So being a child actor is okay as long as it's kept in the family, eh?
Dan's birth year is listed as 1989 on IMDb. His age was given as 11 when it was announced he was cast as Harry Potter. Wish I knew when his birthday was so that I could send him a card. Or an owl. :o)
