there's nothing I hate more than actors in their early twenties playing high school students (or even junior high on occasion) on TV and in the movies

It's inevitable, because it's so cheap.

Compared, that is, to the cost of an extra-tight shooting schedule based on the limited on-set availability of a teenage boy. Add to this the cost of the tutor who's keeping him away from the set.

Sometimes it's worth the trouble: The producers of Apt Pupil went through the hoops to get Brad Renfro to play older, and it was money well spent.

But "teen boys" with 5-o'clock shadow are so much cheaper.
