As an answer to: DVDs cost less to produce than VHS? written by Alexis am 22 Mar 2001 02:10:57:

I'm no expert (as I'm sure YOU know!), but I have drawn the impression from reading about these recording formats that the production costs of DVDs are now close to what audio CDs were when they were first introduced, and the cost is expected to drop as production facilities become more competitive. As I understand it, DVDs and CDs are stamped out in a high-speed production process, whereas in order to duplicate tapes (audio or video), the blank tapes have to be assembled, and then recorded from master tapes. Even though this is done with high-speed dubbing equipment, it is still a time-consuming process.

I would imagine that the cost of developing a DVD is quite a lot higher than audio-CD. Hell, every garage band and self-styled singer-songwriter can bang out their own CD for a few hundred bucks. Between that and Napster, makes you wonder what the future of the recording industry holds, eh? :o)

Since you HAVE been involved in doing these things, how do the production costs REALLY compare? We'd love to hear the inside scoop.
