Hmm... so far as I can tell SS it seems to say that preproduction costs for a DVD are currently at $30,000. I can assure you that VHS costs don't approach this!

And tape replication is still cheaper than CD replication, not that anyone listens to audio cassettes anymore, and with good reason.

Our DVDs have cost quite a bit less than $30 grand to preproduce, mainly because we've gotten people to cut us good deals. More in the range of $10 grand. And I agree with the author of that FAQ that it will come down. However, the ante is surely going to be upped in terms of graphics, navigation and features as more DVDs compete with one another, so there will be a compensating cost pushing prices back up at least for premium packages. Someone's got to design and program all that stuff, and that's the expensive part.

As for music, people at home are unlikely to want to invest the hundreds of thousands of dollars necessary to record, produce, market and promote a hit record. Let alone the tens of thousands necessary to record even a moderately good sounding record! Garage music is wonderful, but it's not what everyone (or even most people) want to listen to.

Love,
Alexis
