problems with my DVD player

My DVD RAM drive has recently given up the ghost. It does nothing but knock when a disc is inside. I've heard of DVD drives going bad and wonder if any of you have had this experience. Are console (non-computer) DVD drives more robust? Is any particular DVD RAM known for it's staying power?
