If memory serves, Clarke and Mazzello both worked with Stanley Kubrick in the early 90's on the original plans for AI, which did not pan out.
As I recall Kubrick's original concept, the film would have taken some 13 years to complete as it followed Joey's growing up in real time! What a fascinating idea-- imagine if he had actually done it-- but none too practical given the realities of the movie biz.
