As an answer to: Billy Elliot written by Flyboy am 29 Apr 2001 10:30:14:

It is far from perfect as a film, but it is a very good first effort for a first-time director. I loved Jamie Bell's performance and the willingness of the production to show a bit of skin and of course his gay school friend. I also have a weakness for boys who dance.

I've sampled the DVD on my new player (yes, it is set up at last!), and the difference between the picture quality and visual impact, comparing the DVD image on my TV set and the full-screen image in the theater house, is quite striking, which underscores Bonzo's point from the other day about the value of seeing proper film in a proper theater. I'm very glad that I got to see this film in a theater, but I'm also glad to have a copy at home to revisit often.

By the way, the freeze-frame and zoom functions on my Nuon DVD player are PHENOMENAL! The only DVD I've sampled so far is "Billy Elliot," and not all disks may respond the same way. However, I can zoom in to a 25 multiplication power, with virtually NO loss of image quality! Of course you cannot resolve details that are not already present in the source material, but the zoom feature on the Nuon player is truly amazing!

I also have my surround sound receiver and speakers all hooked up, and the improved sound actually makes the PICTURE look even better! :o)
