I read an article projecting that one-third of movie theaters will be converted to digital projection by 2006.

"Digital projection" is a fancy way of saying "video", even if it's all done with bits and is labeled "high-definition". The fact is that no current digital video system can match the current image quality of projected film. I have my doubts about whether or not this will change in 5 years.

As a production technology digital video already has a lot to offer, as we can see from the astounding special effects it makes possible. But as a presentation medium it has a long way to go.
