I recommend the original Gloria released in 1980, the one written and directed by John Cassavetes and starring Gena Rowlands (his wife) as Gloria. The boy Phil is well played by John Adames, who is listed on iMDB as appearing only in this film.
Why Sidney Lumet chose to re-make Cassavetes' script less than 20 years after the original is a mystery to me; I suppose it seemed like a good vehicle for Sharon Stone. *sigh*
