Have you ever read any of Patrick O'Brian's books about John Aubrey and Stephen Maturin in the Royal Navy? I think you might enjoy them (I know Alexis is a big fan!). Sadly, O'Brian recently died so there will be no further adventures, but there are approx. 20 very enjoyable volumes in the series, a few of which even mention keel-hauling!
I've only seen D.A.R.Y.L. on TV, too, but that scene was left in. It happens very quickly, though, so I could understand missing it if you ever blink while watching TV (I never do, personally!).
So, Balancer, do you have a DVD player? I do, and someday I'm even going to hook it up! :o)
