OK continuing my week sitting in at home cathing up on the local video releases I watched Agnes Browne last night.

Its exactly what you would expect from allowing an Hollywood personality (Angelica Huston)to direct & star in a non-US film, total pastiche and cliche, in this case about the irish working class for heaven's sake. I guess she saw Angela's Ashes....

The film says nothing. Its full of pretty pictures and some local colour of the vein that all irish girls spend their spare times in costume doing silly dances and the men wear tatty cloth caps and sneak into pubs to drink Guinness all day. Oh, YAWN Angelica.....

What rescues the film for the boylover is the boyage, which is magnificent. The lead character, Agnes ("played" by la Huston) has seven children six of whom are boys aged 14, 13, 12 (twins), 11 and 2. Something for everyone. And they are all cuties even the 2yo but nothing shines in this movie quite like Ciaran Owens as Frankie the delinquent rascal. We know he can act from Butcher's Boy and Angela's Ashes however this boy also has great screen presence and an undoubted irish dimpled chin cuteness. Which makes his casting as the rascal even more endearing somehow.

I think his acting is better than big brother Eamonn's (going by Butcher Boy)- in fact that movie knocks the pants of Angela's Ashes and Agnes Browne imho.
