"Sugar Cane Alley" was a masterpiece of a movie. It was filmed in Martinique and was the story of a boy from a sugar plantation whose grandmother sacrificed so that he could get an education. The boy was an absolutely adorable Carribean youngster. I believe his name was Garry Cadenat and he must have been about twelve when the movie was filmed. His character was precociously bright and eventually won a scholarship to go to school but wound up being unjustly accused of plagiarizing his compositions. I won't give away the entire plot because I think the movie is well worth seeing. I saw it during its original theater release, probably in 1984 or so, and would recommend it to anyone. (By the way, there is no nudity in this movie, but that shouldn't dissuade anybody from seeing a film of this quality.)
