I saw it in the theatre and, honestly, I didn't like it that much. From what I can remember, Ash had some japanese investors who wanted a very quick production. The rush really hurt the film. Some performances were quite thin, and the themes were hitting me over the head like a sledgehammer. It felt like the director just plucked the kids off the street and filmed the thing in one day. Some dialog scenes between the kids should have been redone.. but he had no time.
On the bright side, the kid is very cute and he is in practically every frame.
