I saw it late last year, and I liked it so much I wanted to see it again the next day! I didn't. But I've ordered the DVD already.

The star for our purposes is 8 year old newcomer Jonathan Chang. He absolutely steals the show, and when I saw the movie, the theatre (which was quite full) was buzzing every time he was onscreen.

It's not like very many movies I've seen...not a lot of action or sweeping drama or comedy, but it's a very interesting story of all the characters in an upper middle class family in Taiwan. Jonathan, who takes pictures on his new camera throughout the movie, becomes a kind of spokesperson for the director.

The only criticism I had of "Yi Yi" was that it was over 3 hours long and could probably have been trimmed by 20-30 minutes. But I have no idea what I'd cut out, because the stories were all good.

I saw the Chinese movie that everyone is talking about, "Crouching Tiger," the same week. I ended up talking a lot more about "Yi Yi" than I did about "Crouching Tiger."
