I followed the story with interest when it was in the news, and yes, Mary Kay's father was a hard-core right winger who subbed for George Wallace, but he still had support for his daughter after the trouble she got into.

I didn't think the movie was totally sympathetic to the woman. But instead of blindly condemning her for falling in love with a boy, she was criticized more for the way she abandoned her husband and family in having an affair.

That boy sure was a big 13 y/o, wasn't he? That was also true to the original story. I remember from the news that he looked several years older.
