I really liked HJO's acting in that movie. The scene late in the film where his character is being interviewed on video is a minor masterpiece of understated and natural acting.

I agree with you that those kinds of endings can be exploitative of viewers' emotions, but mass audiences DO tend to eat them up. That kind of melodrama works better in a book (or on soap operas) than in mainstream movies, though, I think.

I didn't care much for Kevin Spacey's acting (although he's done a creditable job in other movies), and Helen Hunt always gets on my nerves, so it was an overall mixed experience for me.

I'm not sorry that I went to see this movie, but I'm sure I'd never want to own a copy.

I AM looking forward to HJO's next two movies, though!
