As an answer to: DVD querstion written by Moody Richard am 15 Jan 2001 02:33:05:

I'm glad you've joined us! To tell the truth, I am in the same boat as you. I don't have a DVD player yet, and the only DVDs I've ever seen are the ones playing in the electronics store.

I've never bothered trying to collect VHS tapes, because I was never all that thrilled with the quality of the video picture and various other reasons (freezeframe is usually blurry, it's inconvenient to jump to a "favorite scene," etc.). The DVD format improves enough on those deficiencies that I've decided to invest in a player (probably in a month or two) and start to gradually build up a small collection. Plus, more and more rental places offer DVD format, especially for the newer films. AND the price of DVD movies is coming way down. Check out some of the Pricegrabber.com links on the DVD catalog! So for all these reasons I'm figuring that DVD is the format to back.

Of course we still need to keep track of things like VHS only, TV shows, forthcoming movies, and all the other cool boy-media stuff. That's why the B.O.Y.S. site is not just meant to be a DVD-only place. I'm just fixated on it because I'm planning to buy a player this year.

As for the type of player, I think I'll opt for a separate component that hooks up to your TV instead of one that goes inside my computer. I've heard that the computer CD-ROM drive manufacturers are phasing out CD-ROM drives in favor of the new drives that play DVD format (and they also play CD-ROMs so those will not be obsolete). So eventually new computers will ALL have DVD drives, but mainly for storage of huge amounts of data, not just movies. It's all very confusing, no?

>By the way. good luck on this great idea for a web site Sensitive Stephen.

Thanks for the good wishes. It IS a great idea, but it can only be a great SITE if you stick around and help! (heh heh! What a motivational speaker I am!)
