Ferdinando Ramos de Silva and the reform school are in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city. At 10 million, Sao Paulo is nearly double the size of Rio. Salvador is a smaller Brazialian city, over a thousand miles nearer the equator. And perhaps on my mind because of this boy who....

In 1981, Sao Paulo accounted for 60% of Brazils Gross National Product. Brazil's population today is over 170,000,00 an increase of 50,000,000 since Pixote was made. But 50% of the population is still under 21, as it was back then. Three million homelss children roamed the streets of Brazilian cities in '81, as Pixote was being produced. I have yet to find a reference indicating how that number has changed. From personal observation, I feel the number of homeless children has increased, as it seems to in most latin countries. Anyone have statistics?
