As an answer to: Firewire versus USB written by Sensitive Stephen am 05 Jun 2001 16:48:51:

There are FireWire & USB cards (including combination cards) for older computers.

USB is meant for slower devices and doesn't really support real-time delivery such as video. It's perfect for scanners, keyboards, mice, SmartMedia/CompactFlash readers, printers, etc.

FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) is designed for high speed devices, especially video capture & external hard drives or CD burners.

All current Mac models have both USB & FireWire built-in. Sony VAIO computers have i.Link, as do almost all digital video cameras.
