I think the writer honestly wanted to recommend the movie to boylovers, without actually saying that in so many words. That's a difficult task in today's atmosphere, which I'm sure exists as strongly (if not more so) at mainstream gay publications as the rest of the mainstream world.
At least he didn't feel like he needed to take a two-by-four to BL movie watchers' heads, like so many other writers would have done.
